Ladies and gentlemen sit down differently. Unfortunately, so many women have been brought up only wearing trousers, pants, jeans and have never worn a skirt or dress. So effectively are in the same position as men are.
In general, men tend to bend at the waist; aim their bum at the spot and then lower them selves straight down. That is why the pleats would bunch up - they are hanging strait down and have nowhere to go. Even sweeping the pleats might not be 100% effective.
On the other hand, a lady bends at the knees, straightens her skirt and slides into the same spot. The difference being that from the first moment she starts to sit, her pleats are held flat and in position. No bunching.

Ah.. perhaps too the lesson too the world will not end with a bit of bunching. That which can be bunched can be un-bunched. Indeed aim the bum and drop it in place. Never really thought of that before, but that is my method. You know in all seriousness I began having trouble when I started the one hand method. I have pain issues and I was only sweeping the right side which landed great, but (pun intended) the left side left me in contact with the chair. Not so bad at home but (sorry) in public places, the thought makes me grimace. Back to the two hand sweep and I'm doing much better. I think this forum is great. I put the question up because I thought it might help other nubies also. Much thanks for the feedback. I'll tackle dealing with wind latter!
