An interesting aside, my COBOL professor in college was on the team that actually developed the language. Interesting old guy and it was interesting to hear about the very early data processing days.

Except for not developing COBOL and being interesting, he sounds a lot like me.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Nope, tried it again, using Clan and Colquhoun, and got ,multiple hits with the word Clan separate from the word Colquhoun. This was an experiment and it did not work within the search tool for the XMTS Forum.

When you write "with the word Clan separate from the word Colquhoun" do you mean in separate posts within the same thread? Possibly, and it's only a guess on my part, when one enters the search criterion "Clan AND Colquhoun", it finds all threads in which those two words occur in the same thread.
It does not guarantee that the two words will appear together in at least one post. It also does not guarantee that the two words will appear together, ie "Clan Colquhoun". While a search would find threads that meet those two criteria, it would also find any thread in which the two words appeared in different posts.
It's a matter of how the search engine interprets the criterion "Clan AND Colquhoun". Is that question answered anywhere on the forum?

Hawk, you should be able to do a phrase search as Steve originally replied, by placing the phrase in double quotes, so like this: "Clan Colquhoun", in the search box with the quotes. You can also click the advanced search button and further refine whether the search looks at both titles and the post itself, or just the title. Specify the order of the results, and also other options.
