    Guten Tag Tom,

Lovely hose indeed. Such a timeless style with the red and white dicing. They especially look quite smart with the green and blue of the Gow hunting tartan in the ancient colour scheme. However, I do agree with Jock. Personally, I probably wouldn't wear this style of hose with a simple, Argyll style jacket in black barathea, rather, I'd wear them with a coatee (Prince Charlie, Kinloch Anderson's coatee, etc) or a doublet of some kind (Regulation, Sheriffmuir, Kenmore, Balmoral, etc) and for black or white tie events only (though the Argyll jacket in black barathea and silver buttons is indeed acceptable for black tie occasions, albeit much less formal than other styles). With the style of jacket and necktie you are wearing in the photos, I would instead opt for a pair of hose in a solid colour, perhaps red or claret, as I think those two "warm" colours would work well with the "cool" colours that dominate your tartan.

Also, as far as garters are concerned with the diced hose, I typically prefer a set of plain wool flashes in a scarlet colour and elastic garter; simple and elegant. Of course, you could also go the more elaborate route (with Highland evening attire/black tie events), yet the rest of your attire really should reflect that elaboration as well (back to my coatee and doublet examples). Anyways, just my two pence here for what it's worth.

Well done on your new hose and you look very well turned out!

    Tschüß!

    Well obeserved.
What I wear in the first pictures is kilt morning dress equivalent as described in MacKinnons book...(but maybe simple charcoal would do also)
And may I remind you we have a lot of members here who wear diced hose as part of normal day wear from time to time.

No, sorry, equal which jacket style you wear evening dress requires dress kilt hose...

The more plain hose are regarded inapproriate...

Hey guys thanks for your replies.

I still would contradict but for not wanting to provoke heartattacks on my incorrect views I don't. But seems as if I read the wrong books about the topic...

About the garters? Whats wrong with them...simple wool self tie garters...!?

@Kyle: Thanks Kyle for your advice. But as far as I am informed also an Argyll needs dress hose for evening events...

Cheers, Tom. One could certainly wear solid coloured hose for formal events too, though I would argue most men choose Argyll style tartan hose, or diced. Red or claret seem to work particularly well. I also think much depends on the level of one's dress, the context of the event, and if there is a dress code (perhaps annotated in an invitation, etc).

    Deal!

Of course I know the hose are very formal and the jacket is not the most formal style.
But for I am not a special friend of the PC so while waiting for a doublet I have to make a little compromise...
And there will not be any kilt experts at the occasion in question so the biggest danger will be to be called "peacockish"...

If you don't want to be described as "peacockish" then I would honestly advise not wearing those diced hose, choose plain hose, bottle green,or claret perhaps and might I also suggest wearing a plain black sporran too. However it is your choice.

Tom: I like the look very much, though I agree with rsvpiper. I would lower the sporran a bit.

@Jock...yes, I start thinking of it...but maybe it didn't become clear it will be a morning to night event so a plain sporran would be out of place or am I also wrong with this?
There will be a little break so I could change...
