Hey John, thanks..I didn't dress properly this afternoon...was just a quick tryon so the sporran isn't at it's right place...

There will be a little break so I could change...
It is perfectly acceptable for guests who have attended the events during the day to continue to to wear the same day attire during the evening. Some may wish to change, but it is not normally necessary. However it would be very wrong for those who are only attending the evening festivities to attend wearing day attire-----assuming evening dress was required.

The reason that those attending the events during the day get allowed to wear their day attire during the evening is entirely a practical one, in that the guests may be far from home and may not have anywhere to change and time may be at a premium, so they don't and no one worries!

    Thanks again Jock

I will be in church at morning and also at the evening event.
But staying in the hotel where the party takes place there will be chance to change.
So I guess I will do less at morning and grade up for the evening event (including the "peacockish" hose, sorry )

    Hi Guys,

me again. Just for the case I did not make it clear: It will be from morning to evening event.

To let you know where I got my ideas from I scanned some parts of "Tartans and Highland Dress" by MacKinnon. A book from 1961.

    and agian in better quality

Following this I would be pretty right.
It may be an oldfashioned style today but...not wrong

The dissonance I'm reading between opinions in this thread is something we deal with almost constantly here on X-Marks. Jock's depth of knowledge and experience is a source which we all use, and on which we rely, along with that of Phil, Thistledown, and others.

Where the dissonance comes in is that we will all indeed be wearing highland dress, but in places where we live about the globe, people perceive that highland dress through eyes that are trained to look for things other than those which current and historical highlanders might regard.

Thus as just one example, from Jock and I think also from his friend Phil, I've learned not to worry as much about "matchy-matchy" as I might once have done, but as an experienced Canadian, and one who has observed for sixty years how highland dress is worn in Ontario, I know that those around me would be surprised were my sporran and shoes not of the same colour leather. The result would be that they could, and likely would, be quickly distracted from the beautiful garment that is the kilt and, less impressed with it than they might have been.

In order to wear and show the kilt to its greatest advantage, and to do it justice in the settings where we live, all of us except the highlanders, need to keep in mind both what is the traditional/ normal application of highland dress, and also what our experience teaches us that those around us will think of it when we prepare in our dressing rooms in the morning or late afternoon.

It's a wrinkle in the pleats which means that in each nation outside the highlands where X-Markers live, there will be, and must be, slight variations in the application of what is perhaps somebody else's traditional dress. Further, in this discussion I haven't even referenced what various social circles might consider.

i think this is a trad more recent per jock vs trad then with the old illustration. also keep in mind that the displeasure has similar roots to the present onus of the white hose due to the overabundance of white hose with bands in the not so recent past. the temperature of the water depends on when and where you put the thermometer.

    @Father Bill:

Thank you for your differenced reply.
Being here for little more than a year I learned one thing about kiltwearing:
There is no right or wrong.
It might be unusual or overdone in some opinions but it isn't uncorrect.
The more kilts are very rarely seen in Germany so i will be a "bird of paradise" with or without my diceed hose. And I prefer to be one with!
I was just a bit astonished by the unaccustomed absoluteness the discussion was led.
Nevertheless I am happy about my new beautiful hose!

I like the hose, Tom. I'm jealous! Wear them in good health.
