Garter ties--too short or not tight enough?

    Hello,

I purchased a pair of beautiful, blood red garter ties from the STM's gift shop to go with my bison colored hose. This Saturday, I was going to wear them for the first time (both the hose and the garters). Beforehand, I watched MAC's video on how to properly tie the ties. It was easy to understand, but when I went to do it, it appeared that I didn't have enough material to both knot them and flip the ends under the garter. I have generously proportioned calves, I'll admit, but not quite so large as to warrant specially made hose. So I was surprised when the ties didn't "fit". Do I need longer ties or should I really snug these down? I didn't want to stretch them, because if they truly don't fit, I want to pass them along in as-new condition to someone with smaller calves.

    Advice? Thoughts?

    Jared

I don't have particularly large legs but I have noticed that these type of garters do naturally stretch with normal wear so I would not worry in the slightest about giving them a bit of a stretch. Also remember that they don't have to dangle very far; many of the most elegantly dressed have only a suggestion of garter peaking from under the cuff of the hose.

Does Matt wrap his around his leg twice in his video? You can do it with just one "circuit" which may help: they don't really have to be very tightly tied - just have a bit of tension in them.

Is there a particular way to tie these? A garter knot, if you will?

I have 17-171/2 inch calves, for the twice round approach you would need garter ties about 40 inches long. I have just commissioned a couple of pairs from my kiltmaker, who also knits, for less than the price of ready made.

My calves are really big and I was having the same issue. I could only wrap it around ones and I couldn't figure out a knot that didn't bulge a lot. I remembered I had bought some of these http://milspecmonkey.com/store/hardw...dominator.html for a backpack to tie up the webbing and I tried it on my garters and it works great to hold them in place with out tying them. I did shorten the piece of elastic a bit.
