Bias cut tartan waistcoat
For eveningwear I have 2 doublets (bottle green barathea Balmoral and black velvet single breasted Montrose style) as well as a Prince Charlie coatee and waistcoat.
Since I have some options, I'm certainly in no rush but I've been thinking that it might be nice to jazz up my Prince Charlie coatee with a bias cut, tartan waistcoat in the Prince Charlie style (three buttons, lapels etc...).
I know I can special order these from a bespoke shop like Kinloch Anderson but I don't want to pay those kind of prices. Is there anyone on xmarks who would be capable of such a project and would be interested? Alternatively, is there a pattern available somewhere that I could shop around to local tailors in search of a winning deal?
It's a whim so I'm not willing to drop $350 + shipping on it, but hey, I'd like to have one if the stars align.
And on the off chance that anyone has one that they've outgrown, I'm looking for Macdonald of clanranald modern.
Slainte,

I have two vests one from Matt Newsome and one from Bonnie Greene. Both charge less than KA and you can count on their quality and service. If I wanted another one I'd go back to them.

Bonnie made a regular bias cut one for me which I'm happy with. I'm sure she could knock you up a dress one if you ask her nicely.

I have exactly that on order right now with John Hart at Keltoi one of our sponsors. He's also on my second kilt from his workshop, and I've been over the edge pleased with everything he's done for me to date.

I'm with Fr Bill. When I have my kilt made I also had John order a bias cut vest for me. I have a photo somewhere that I need to post; will try to get that done in a day or so under Keltoi's tab on the site so you can check it out.

Nathan, Heritage of Scotland also offers tartan waistcoats in all styles and tartans (extensive drop down menus). They appear to be reasonably priced at $163 US for a 16oz MOC tartan in the style you described. I have a number of tweed jacket and waistcoat sets from them, and am happy with them all. Their timeliness has improved on my last two purchases with the jackets actually arriving ahead of their scheduled completion dates.
Give them a look.

Nathan: I had a bias-cut vest measured and made by Margaret at Burnetts for well below your budget. They did a really nice job and in fact I just bought a pair of Magee Donegal trousers that goes really well with it, so I can get double duty along with my kilt. (I'll post a photo when I work through how to do it.)

What size you need?
Have a Kathy Lare sewn X Marks tartan vest with stag buttons...I'm about a 50 or 52....would probably clash with anything other than an X Marks tartan kilt.
And, as you can see its not on the bias....she recommended doing it this way...so went with it.

Looking sharp Riverkilt. I'm a 40R and I'm looking for a 3 button Prince Charlie style bias cut in Macdonald of Clanranald Modern from Locharron. The Xmarks tartan looks good. I already have a 5 button tartan waistcoat in clanranald modern that is not cut on the bias but I don't think it would work with the Prince Charlie.

I have a few HoS waistcoats and the quality is fine, but they send out for the tailoring, thus the tartan waistcoat and vest I ordered were less than perfect due to the complicated tartan wanted, despite communications the corrections could not get passed on correctly to the tailor, as a result I will get them corrected by my local tailor.

Yes, please post pictures. Burnetts may be a better source for a bias cut ...
