Tie to match Cinnamon Hose from House of Cheviot?

Hi All,

My Irish friend has a plain tweed kilt and jacket (kilt is green tweed, jacket is a deep blue tweed - image attached), and decided to get these as he didn't like any of the Irish tartans associated with his county. The jacket and kilt themselves are nicer than I expected they would look together but accessorizing them has been a little harder (and he didn't think about this before getting the kilt and jacket!)

I've been trying to help him find some hose and a tie and I came across the Cinnamon Hose from House of Cheviot and thought these looked really nice and would give the outfit a bit of color (and also be a subtle nod to irish saffron) but I thought about matching the tie in cinnamon too but they don't do a matching tie unfortunately.

Does anyone have any alternative suggestions to give the outfit a bit of pop?

I wouldn't worry about trying to match hose and tie.

I think that the kilt and jacket look very smart but I would dispense with the matching tie and select unmatched hose and tie in complementary or contrasting colours. Your suggestion of orange (cinnamon) hose should indeed provide a good contrast. A tie with diagonal stripes in various colours (such as the ABF which has already been suggested) would work well.

Here are some lovely alternatives from Ben Silver. Ben Silver's ties are expensive- I can't afford them- but you ought to be able to find something similar at a lower price point elsewhere. I think a little pattern is needed. In fact, I'd recomment a patterned shirt AND a patterned tie...

In my humble opinion the outfit is crying out for tattersall shirts and "regimental/club" style ties.

Many thanks everyone, I hadn't considered a patterned tie at all so thanks for the insight, I think that would look far better than a solid colour tie (i'll also suggest the patterned shirt to him)

In my humble opinion the outfit is crying out for tattersall shirts and "regimental/club" style ties.

Cinnamon hose would be my go-to along with a striped tie in this case (or brown hose). I understand that your friend probably wants to keep a nod to Eire in his kilted attire.

Let me ask this (in order to offer another perspective): What sort of hose did the Gaelic Revivalists in Ireland wear when the kilt was brought to Ireland 100 years ago? I have seen photos of, for example the Irish revolutionary Conn Colbert, wearing the kilt on several occasions but I'm not certain about the hose (they weren't clearly visable in the photos). Perhaps colour is not the direction to go but rather an historically-inspired theme?

Either way complimentary or contrasting colours are a stand-up idea, too, and from what I understand spot-on traditional (at least in Scotland). Fine-looking tweed kilt! Gawd I love tweed!


Jock, thanks to your (and several others') advice I have recently discovered the joys of tattersall shirt ownership. Here is my question:
With regard to THCD daywear are tattersall and checks (windowpane, et al) pretty much the only acceptable pattern with regard to "how it's done" or are others considered fine?

I mention this because I seldom see kilted men wearing what we call THCD in anything else (aside from the occasional plain shirt or safari-styled shirt, weather permitting).

Talking THCD day wear and non formal events generally here.Tattersall just works(why consider anything else?) as long as one does not get too carried away with the colours and size of check that is. But sometimes, I and others wear gingham checks, bengal stripes, houndstooth and pale(pale blue works well) solid colours. Again the stripes(pale grey,pale green, pale blue) and checks need to be not too large and subdued colours for best effect.

Assuming youre going to stay with the white shirt, there are many color options. I would be looking for yellow/red/orange ranges. Dont forget a pocket square a little lighter or darker than the tie or a line of a striped tie.
