For me it's boots almost exclusively. For shooting weddings or doing anything else dressy I've got a pair of Doc Martens 1460s and a pair of Corcoran jump boots that shine up real nice. Otherwise it's just about always an old pair of Vasque hikers.

Just as when I wear pants or shorts, my foot wear varies with the occasion - brogues, oxfords, sandals, and occasionally boots. Boots I think are best suited to modern kilts, perhaps with scrunched socks, and better suited for the younger set. Hiking boots and a kilt work well when actually hiking.

Also, it would depend on your personal style and foot health needs, of course.
I always wear boots unless it is for a white tie affair (kilted or Saxon dress). I have minor ankle instability, so I must have the extra support a boot provides. White-tie is the only time I'll risk it, and then it's a pair of velvet slippers, with a very thin sole (about as close to being bare-foot as I can get).

For me, a proper full brogue in polished, black leather every time - unless I am hill walking, or if it's rainy and muddy out, then of course it's brown leather hiking boots, or a pair of Hunter wellies in olive green.

I am pretty solidly in the boot camp with my kilts. I have a pair of Chippewah jump boots that work well when I am going casual. To take it up a small notch I wear a pair of Bass ankle height boots that pretty much can go anywhere and work with all my kilts. Until recently, I had to go all the way to ghillie brogues to do anything dressier. I am not anti-ghillies, but they always seem a little formal (read fussy) for most of my kilt wearing opportunities. Just recently was given a pair of Kenneth Cole suede brogue wing tips. A friend has worn them twice and found them too small...lucky me. They look fantastic with my Isle of Skye.
Ideally I'd like a pair of brogue boots like the Wolverine 1000 Mile series. They hit exactly the right note of cool, vintage, dress, casual that I am looking for. Now if I can only buck up and save the $$ for them!

			What's wrong with both

I wear both traditional and more modern kilts and thus wear boots, brogues, tennis shoes, whatever, depending on where I'm going and what I plan on doing.
i truly am a fan of my traditional ghillie brogues, I, just this past weekend wore a camo kilt with my Ghillators (croc like ghillie brogues) and just ordered what I think are going to be my favorite:
