So I have gone in and tried on an Argyle jacket and had to absord the situation.
Firstly, the jacket is quite a different fit from a regular suit jacket (the ones I am used to) and that threw me for a bit. It just seed too short, althought I know that that is how they are meant to fit.
Secondly, I did have to go up two sizes from my regular jacket size (no, I have not put on weight since I bought my last suit?) so that too threw me a curve ball.
All this mixed with the fact that I had a rugby shirt and shorts on, so the whole set up felt silly to me. I will return with a kilt on and try again.
Or I will buy it, try it at home and return it if I so choose!

When I order my next kilt I'm also going to order a charcoal grey argyl jacket. Next week my friendlt neighborhood measurer will stop by my work and take my measurements for the jacket. I know that I'm going to have to pay a wee extra considering my size.

So I went back to the shop yesterday with one of my kilts on. I had also brought along a nice shirt, so that I could get the full feel for the jacket. However, I still did not like this jacket. The fit was too short, the shoulders to bulky, and the waist length was standard for all jacket sizes, meaning that this may have been long on someone that was 5'8, but not on someone that is 6'4. The jacket had the straps on the shoulders for a fly plaid (do they all?It doesn't seem like it from the photos I have seen) and the bottom was situated at waist length.
Is this how it is supposed to fit? I always thought that the Argyle sat a bit lower than the PC.
I have not given upp on the Argyle, but have decided not to purchase from a local shop. Besides they only had black, and not charcoal grey.
I also believe that I will be looking for a Crail jacket, rather than an argyle. Or I may just check out Thompson's pattern and have one tailor made.
Alas the day was not a total loss, I stopped in to buy myself a new CD, and ended up buying Seris 1 and 2 of Monarch of the Glen.

I believe most Argyle jackets (and the Crail; at least the one The Kilt Store sells) have epaulets on the shoulders. This is because the jacket originated from a military jacket. I'd imagine these could be removed, or you could possibly request they not be added if you're ordering the jacket to be made for you. Since you're tall, make sure you order your size jacket in a long; the shop you looked at may have just had a regular size.
If I recall correctly, some of the pictures of jackets in the jacket thread from a few weeks ago showed jackets without epaulets. I quite liked a few of them myself.

Just for comparison, my argyle does have the buttoned epaulets. I like 'em. The bottom of my jacket falls about 4" below my navel. This would just cover a belt if I was wearing a pair of pants. BTW, the kilts I wear with it are fully traditional length complete with rise to under the ribcage. The jacket you tried just may not have seemed long enough if your kilt was low rise. Just a thought.

I thought of that Blu, but the kilt was worn around the naval, so it wasn't low. The jacket would have barely (if even) covered a belt. I t may have just been the fit. From the pictures I have seen, the button is located closer to the naval. On these is was nearer the chest, and yes it was the long, not the regular. I will try and see if I can try one on elsewhere.

Best not jump into it. I'm certain there's a kilt jacket out there somewhere with your name on it. Don't give up though. And good luck with your ongoing quest.

Colin,
I would think that you may need a tall jacket.
