OK, how cool is THIS? a Jazz an dkilts post.

Hi gentlmen, Alan H from California here. I play in a celtic/jazz fusion band. Well, we call it that, but truth is we play whatever we damn well want. I split my time between clarinet, soprano and alto sax, pennywhistles and low whistle. Yeah, with a little shokuhachi (Japanese end-blown flute) and chaleumeau (the historical precursor to the clarinet) thrown in.

We play everything from Mozart to Brahms (the bass player is a great cellist) to Miles Davis to Benny Goodman to stuff inspired by Jan Garbarek and Cherish the Ladies. Hell, we even play some klezmer tunes!

We don't make a dime, but we have a lot of fun. Well, OK, sometimes we make a dime or two!

Anyway, I think the kilt is gonna work out with the band.

    hey Alan,

your band sounds really interesting. I play a little pennywhistle myself (and I mean A LITTLE) because I wrote a tune for my first CD that needed it (plus, I just like playing it) and even had a band where I was trying to get some of my jazz friends who were into Celtic music (and instruments) in the same room with my African and Indian percussion friends (sometimes it does pay to live in NYC!), but it never quite came off.

Welcome, I've worn my kilt to several gigs now and even have one young lady (who for some reason shows up at most of my gigs) who comments on the kilt every single time. I think she digs it!

    Mark

No CD's of the Celtic/Jazz fusion gang, but you can find about a fliptillion CD's of the symphony I play in here:

    http://www.redwoodsymphony.org

You can also buy our CD's on Amazon.com

Hate to say it, but there's not much there of a Cdeltic bent. The conductor basically hates English/Irish/Scots music, and I think the only thing we've ever played by an Anglican composer in Holst's "Planets". We've done all the mahler symphonies, though I don't think we have them out on commercial CD's.
