    MacMillan from Missouri

    Hello!

I am aware of the various spellings of MacMillan - the ones I use here are those used by my family or commonly in what references we have seen. For instance, most of the earliest records from my family seem to be McMullen, but from the mid 1800's, it is consistently McMillen in my family's records. My grandmother's maiden name was McMillen, and her father, and his father are pretty well documented.

While I have seen reference to McMillen and McMullen being more often connected with Ireland, and Mac'Mhaoillan as the origin for the surname, clanmacmillan.org has my line within it's index, with William "the Colonist" McMullen, 1730(?)-1794. He seems to have been from Kintyre. To make matters worse, my grandmother was fond of referring to us as Scots-Irish, though that likely was family connections to Scotland (hers) and supposed Irish heritage on my grandfather's side. I know this is not the correct definition of Scots-Irish, but there are plenty of Americans who use it this way - my grandmother may have been one.

If there are other McMillens (or other spellings...) connected with the pioneer families of TN and MO, and care to connect and share stories, please do!

Welcome aboard crsbryan! Fortunately, you have an large and active MacMillan branch in your area. The branch president is Robert Jones and you can reach him at:

    macmillansofappalachia@gmail.com

He may be able to put you in contact, or make suggestion for who to contact, to get the information you are seeking. I have also found our own "MacMillan of Rathdown" to be a wealth of information on clan history, and he too may be able to recommend people, or reading material, to help you in your quest.

If you haven't seen them, I posted some photos recently in a thread called "Stone Mountain Games, a MacMillan's Perspective" that have photos of myself and some of our clansman from your region.

Again, welcome aboard and best of luck in your search.

    Regards,
    Brooke

Brooke, being a modest (and immodestly handsome) man, relies upon his peons to point you all (y'all?) in the right direction. His lady is the real attraction, by the way.

    Thanks, Brooke!
I have sent an e-mail to Robert Jones.
And, yes, I did see your pictures from the Stone Mountain Games. Very nice! And thanks, again, for sharing those.
