The comments thus far have been great. I didn't see anyone post a link to thistle shoes ( http://www.thistleshoes.com/ ) as they have a great brogue boot with highland attire in mind that they make that is very high quality. A pair is on my wishlist but I have to wait a bit. Eventually I will probably order these:

They call them a ghillie boot but they seem more brogue than ghillie to me despite the nod to the ghille style with the extended tongue lace holes. The subtle reference is slick though. The other pair posted already would fit the moniker ghillie boot a bit better I would think, although they are certainly more extreme.

    Here's mine.
They're the original Ren-fair mocassins, called "Fongs" after John Fong, the guy who came up with the original and widely-copied design. I went to his tiny shop in San Francisco to get a cast of my foot done, from which he did the pattern. They're bison-hide with antler buttons. This was taken between sets at a Celtic Music Festival and Highland Games, which is why I'm still wearing the wireless mic.

Those are similar to a pair my wife bought some 5 or 6 years ago from "The Original Medieval Moccasins", a Texas based company, that has been manufacturing moccasins for more than 30 years now (she also has a pair of their low top moccasins.) They use a softer sole on their shoes, and the use of a rosette of leather at the toe to make minor adjustments to the fit. She loves them for their comfort,...I like the way they look on her.

According to their website, their "....shoes are an original design based on styles found throughout Europe from the Bronze age, through Greek and Roman times, and up to present day."
