Actually £400 is not an expensive kilt in Scotland, for a proper kilt----as opposed to the Gold bros/Lidle creations------ it is quite easy to add, at least another £200+ to the bill, depending on which kilt maker you visit. One of the main reasons, I suggest, why THE kilt is kept for special occassions in Scotland.

It seems ironic that kilts are more expensive in Scotland than outwith (nevermind those Gold Bros [and their ilk] kilts).

I have been quoted around $500 USD for an 8-yard 16oz with proper stabliser/reinforcement/what-have-you that makes for a "proper" kilt (hand-stitched even) by some of the finest in the game, some of whome are advertisers here.

My next will be 8-yards, certainly, but that's a way off down the road.

At a guess, high labour costs, stratospheric business rates(local taxes) and exhorbitant general running expenses.

Ok my turn. If it were me, knowing what I know now, I would spend the same total money as if I had purchased the "top of the line" kilt with all the bits eg. hose, jacket ect. But, I would ditch the ghillie brogues. Change the (off)white hose and get charcoal or claret hose. Then I would get the mid-range kilt and spend the balance of my money to get the best possible sporran I could get. A well made mid-range kilt will do you fine, but a cheap sporran looks like a cheap sporran.

Also Bren, the UK have 20% VAT on everything that stops on home shores. I can actually buy a kilt made in Scotland, have it delivered to Australia and it is usually cheaper than those in the UK pay.

Two items from MHO:

In 1985 I was in Scotland and ordered a Crawford kilt from these Gentleman. It is the only kilt I own and I am still wearing it. Quality speaks for itself.

Last time I was in Scotland (2009 Burns gathering of the Clans) I noted over the years that they had opened at least one additional storefront in Edinburgh. Being in business for a quarter century speaks more to the continued quality and business ethic of M & M.

If I needed another kilt I wouldn't hesitate walking into their shop again.

And across the EU, there are rates much higher than that even, almost makes Australia's 10% GST look like a steal. I did say "almost"!
