Andy: Congratulations on your new son! My sincere input is to not give him a name that will engender teasing from other kids. Remember the Johnny Cash song, "A Boy Named Sue". I am not implying that any of the suggested names are in that category. That is entirely up to you. My wife taught school for 35 years and saw many kids with unusual names taunted by their classmates. It's no fun for the kid. Good luck with your selection.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Voted. I think all of the choices are strong names. Congratulations!

The first one. Oswin is a cool (female) character in Dr Who, although it is actually a boy's name, and then there's the outrageously funny Maxwell Smart in Get Smart. So that's two TV characters that I like, although to be honest, I do tend to think that getting lumbered, I mean blessed, with any of these names would be a bit of a cross to bear. It's your prerogative, though.

The names we picked (or haven't) are not common names, but where we live there are a fare amount of old traditional names eg. Gunner, Ollie, Trygve
and Renate and this is just in my sons pre-school. We also have a neighbor who's twins named Thor and Freya will be going to school with our #2 son, there was also a Rett and a caitness born this year. When you stack these names up against that they're not so different. I do also feel that it doesn't
matter what you name your kids someone else's kid will find away to pick on them.

I'm just glad you and your wife didn't think it would be 'cute' to name your son 'Door' or 'Hitching'.

I AM a Scout leader. Must be part of the training.

I've read of names that are no doubt intended to be 'cute' or a pun, but caused endless embarrassment for the person so named. Sometimes it's just the persons initials that cause trouble for them. I'm sure the inquisitive can find a list somewhere of names that may be spelled one way, but pronounced entirely differently from the common pronunciation. (e.g. Camel, pronounced ka-MEL.)
