How do you stand the wait?
Glad to find this group. I've been kilting for about 4 years. Wore kilt travelling across the country from South Carolina to Washington and making a return trip to Virginia soon. I don't kilt full time, because of the job, but more often than not I'm wearing.
I Own 4 UKs, 2 Neokilts, USA Kilt (traditional), an acrylic blackwatch from ebay.
My first question for the board is: How long is the wait and how do you deal with it?
I ordered 8 Yard Mackay from Terry at Bearkilts in late May, A "Hilt" in June and just placed an order for an A' Sgeadachadh in Navy Edzell from www.TheJarlsofLochlann.com. I don't mind waiting for a quality product, which I feel these items will be, but....it would be nice to know when to expect the new suprises.

James,
Glad you posted
It sounds as if you are experiencing a bad case of jonesing. It is common amongst us all, and by far what keeps us up at night just wondering and waiting.
I can only talk about Bear and his kilts, yes the wait is long, it does take him awhile to get it to you. His popularity has blossomed and it is showing in his business, as it is blossoming also. I know his work is quality from my own experience and others on the forum (see Jimmy Carbomb's post about CON SIS TAN CY in the Bearkilt forum) also speak very highly of his work.
Dealing with the wait is a very hard thing to do, but thinking about it helps a little, and if you try not to think about it lasts if you are lucky about one hour. Patience, I know it is hard but it is my only advice, because it is well worth the wait, because Terry does not skimp on quality.
Let us know when they both kilts arrive, so we can have a great big party

Busy places take longer.
Quality takes longer.
"True" custom-making takes longer.
Care, craftsmanship, and skill take longer.
This goes for any business really.
As for the specific kilt companies, I wish that I could help you with that one. It might just be as simple as an email. All will usually answer the inquiries pretty fast.
I will be REAL interested in the KaberKilt when it arrives. You MIGHT just be the first reviewer on the site. With their "association", I think that the quality will be outstanding.

Actually it is encouraging me to consider buying a Bear Kilt now sometime. It's a bit higher then my budget but at least I have a kilt now so I don't think I would mind the wait. Sounds like everyone that has one of his loves it.
I like to eat at nice French restruants, and don't mind the long wait for a good dinner. If I want fast food, I go to a fast food place and take what I get.
Having said all that I like my Amerikilt a lot- I did not have to wait for it as long as othere AmeriKilt buyers, but that is because Michael considered my situation and worked extra hours to get it to me, and custom too. Note the pics, the pocket is on the left, not the right side.

I find that the wait for my Bear kilt has come to be like being outside in winter in shorts. At first your legs burn and start to ache from the biting winds and all you can think about is relief. But after a little while the pain starts to go away and is replaced with a comfortable numbness. Soon after that though is frostbite, hypothermia, and eventual death but I'm pretty certain it won't come to that. <shiver>

My last two kilts were from USAK, my wait for the last one was two and a half weeks, that included 12 day shipping to Australia, and I'm more than happy with the quality.
I hear that a traditional kilt from our sponsor Kiltstore will be shipped out in 5-8 weeks.
Nicolson, in the Royal Mile ship kilts out in 4 weeks.

I have had to endure the 3 month wait for a Bear kilt as well. You will not be disappointed. As others have said, true quality takes time, and it's that extra effort that lets us know that our kilt will stand up over time.
Quick shipping usually means that the quality and care were not put into the garment. This will begin to show in time, and doens't fill me with confidence in ordering that product. Rome wasn't built in a day, but the trailer park was!

Good kilts are not off the rack.
This is a custom made GARMENT.
I have read how to make a handsewn kilt and this is a very labour intensive job. One can even apply that to the machine sewn casuals.
A good kilt is worth the wait.
A poor kilt is worth nothing.
End of rant.
I am not by nature a patient person.

There is no cure for kilting, and the "jonesing" is just one of the few negative side-effects! We all share your pain. More than one of us have sat down with thhe various makers info and tried to time the arrival of our kilts so that they arrive on a regular basis. Most of us have been known to order another kilt because we can't stand the wait for the one we ordered last month. You might take a cue from Bubba and a few others here who have started making their own kilts. That way you'll stay too busy to jones and you'll develop a new skill at the same time.
