Jock is, of course, spot on.
As for the tartan...there are three origin stories for the Government Sett or "Black Watch". P.E. MacDonald or figheadair is the real expert.
However, James D. Scarlett wrote at length about it as well: "Military Tartans", Tartan: The Highland Textile, p.25-33 w/ End notes; London, Shepheard-Walwyn Publishers, Ltd. 1990.
Matthew A.C. Newsome has a very good essay re: Military tartans also, and I believe there is a book entitled The Tartans of Clan Campbell, or something to that effect.
Lest we forget the stance of the 9th Duke of Argyll and his specific decree about which tartans are in standing throughout Clan Campbell and Associated Dependents, echoed by his current Grace.
www.ccsna.org has the decree with a modicum of additional sett history.
In the interest of full-disclosure, I am not a Campbell - just a student.
