Dalgliesh silk prices?
Does anyone know what Dalgliesh charges for custom woven silk? Any other information about costs? They say they can weave as little as 5 yards, but they make no mention of price pr yard or set-up charge, etc. Has anyone had any experience ordering from them?
Thanks
M'll

Oops, my bad. My price list is for commercial customers.
I just went through three entire processes of placing retail orders for a minimum run (5 meters or 5.5yards) of 3oz silk fabric in their stock Tartan range. All the orders were for the same Tartan.
On my first try I received a quote, with shipping to Canada of £545.76. That comes out to $888.88usd or $161.61usd per yard at today's exchange rate.
On my second and third attempt I was quoted £603.40. That comes out to$982.75usd or $178.68usd per yard.
All of the 3oz silk fabrics are listed to be 30" wide or single width.
The shipping method I chose was priority international courier (£29.65) so there would likely be duty and customs when the fabric arrives.
The estimated ship date was, "on or after, 3 March 2014".
It has been my experience that an additional £100.00 is added after you order for a short run set up charge. This is anything less than 30 meters. This did not appear on the form when I filled it in.
This would bring the total to $1051.75usd. ($191.23usd per yard) or for the second and third attempts $1145.63 ($208.30usd per yard)
It is also listed on the ScotWeb site that there would be additional charges for non stock Tartans, customer designed Tartans, and for custom colors.
As I was quoted widely differing prices, and I do not know if you would need any special design or dying of yarns or quicker delivery perhaps you should try this for yourself.

Steve, I'm fairly certain that their custom set-up charge applies on ALL orders, no matter how large.
When pricing the 2nd run of the R'lyeh sett (in wool) despite the fact we had +100yd double width (ended up over 160yd) Dalgliesh were going to charge
set up (as well as £100 each for the three custom dyed colours we would have needed)- making for over £400 in 'special' fees.

It may or may not fit in with your needs (size of run, width, etc.), but http://www.stcroixweaving.com/sWcHome.htm
does hand-woven silk tartans that are absolutely beautiful.

thanks, all. I am investigating this for a friend who wants a Kennedy silk tartan tie and cummerbund set. I figured maybe his wife could have an evening dress out of the remaining minimum order, or he could get a couple of extra ties. Matt Newsome has said that Dalgliesh's silk is far more beautiful then the Dupioni we sometimes see. Well, at $200+ per yard net, it really would need to be. My friend is one of those people who have a little bit of money largely because they do not spend it readily. He was not excited at the prospect of spending $60-$75 a yard which was what I thought it might run. I believe in paying for what you want and I believe that quality is almost always a bargain, but my head is still spinning from reading Steve's post.
By the way THE SCOTTISH WEAVER does offer Dupioni in a range of tartans, though most of them are in a large sett: http://www.thescottishweaver.com/SilkTartanPlaidFabric/ . I suspect these are woven in India. I have seen a handful of Indian silk tartans and they are often pretty. TSW ( no financial connection for me) is not exactly giving theirs away at $90 a yardm plus shipping, probably.
Again, thanks.

Contrary to the advertising there are quite a few artisan weavers still around.
Geoffrey Nickelsby is one and so are Ingles Buchan.
I have been using Ingles Buchan exclusively for all my special orders for quite some time now. Hence why I could not quote the current prices from Dalgliesh.
Retail sales for Ingles Buchan are handled by www.tartanonline.com.
They list the Kennedy Tartan among their stock silk fabric lines.
They also offer silk cummerbunds separately or in sets with matching bow tie. List price is £45.00.
