Never had to actually remove the kilt in public, but I do flip the pleats up and gather them to the side with my ... non-paperwork hand. Sometimes the belt does seem to be in the way and it gets removed, but usually the sporran to the side, belt on, pleats flipped up more or less onto my back and held in place does fine.

    Great choice of words!

I tried setting buissness with my kilt on once, the belt, sporran, and pleats all got in the way and was so uncomfortable (to me) that I couldnt do what I went in there to do. I have to disrobe, I guess the first time I have to use a port-a-john, I'll have to give it another try.
    Somebody ought to.

Hmmm... I do find that I use a cubicle, as I don't like raising my kilt at the front when standing next to someone else, and I always wear my sporran high up, so it isn't in the way of that anyway. As for the other thing, I just gather up the kilt and tuck it, although I do remove my sporran. As for a kilt belt, I don't wear them, but I suppose I'd take it off if I did.
