I can't find fault with anything Steve said so I encourage you to follow his advice. For my tastes, I like red flashes with green hose. Red and green are very traditional flash colours and the MacDonald modern has a lot of red and green. Your hose don't have to match your tartan, but in this case, I think it really works. Regardless of what you wear above your waist, you really can't go wrong with green hose and red flashes with a MacDonald of MacDonald modern tartan. It's a classic look with most any tartan but with our tartan it just looks meant to be.
I may be biased though because my Highland Regiment wore MacDonald modern with green hose, red flashes black shoes and a brown leather sporran as one order of dress and I think it was imprinted on me as a sharp, well put together look.
I'm not saying it's the only look that works by any means. I just dyed a pair of hose bright yellow and am going to try to figure out a shirt and tie combo that makes those work without looking clownish. It would be much easier with a subdued green tartan like Blackwatch, Cape Breton or Macneil of Barra but I'm confident I can make it work.
Start with classic and then branch out as your tastes evolve.
Just some advice from someone who has worn that tartan regularly for a couple of decades.
