I really wanted to ask about the badge. Perhaps it's a legitimate clan badge, with which I'm just not familiar? Hmmmm.

As has been said already, there are several clan Chiefs (including my own) who use the boar's head as the crest of their arms and as the main symbol of their badges. Most of the illustrations of the Campbell crest I have seen feature tusks exaggerated vertically, so if this is supposed to be a Campbell boar, it is not typical.

First of all, I think the points made by all the commentators to this thread so far are all valid and absolutely spot on.

However, even sitting as I do here in Sleat - withing 300 yards of the ruins Armadale Castle - I recognised instantly that Nathan's tongue was indeed (cleverly, I thought) firmly planted in his cheek when he posed his initial conundrum.

This hybrid badge IS highly unusual to those "in the know". It was either created in ignorant innocent bliss, or as a deliberate antagonistic foil. Sadly, unless it's provenance is established, or the original "artist" comes forward with a motive, we will never know "what the heck this is."
