You can't go wrong with this combination.

You can't go wrong with tweed. Even if everyone else is dressed very casually, tweed will give you a smart dressy look without being over the top like a PC.

My general rule of thumb is that if I'm even considering tweed against another option, tweed is the right answer.

Precisely, Tobus! "I've got a need for tweed!"

    Could you choose another option--both?

A look I quite like is the thin turtleneck black sweater (think cashmere) under a tweed jacket. I have seen Sean Connery rock that look kilted and man was he looking slick.

Many thanks to all. I'm going with the grey tweed and a charcoal waistcoat (haven't found the cashmere turtleneck, which I love by the way). My new, very bright, Boyd Modern kilt, bottle green hose, black accoutrements, and tie. I think the charcoal waistcoat will be great with the black in the kilt, but I'm unsure of the tie. Solid or stripe? Matching tartan or off the wall?

    Its still in the works...

ok....I was looking at the wrong kilt! Hopefully the charcoal will look good with the dark GREEN in the Boyd tartan.

Nathan does the tweed with a jumper look very well, too.

For the tie... I'd go with a stripe. I usually pick something that accents or compliments a colour in my kilt.
