For late 18th and early 19th centuries, I love the work of David Allen. The Highland Wedding at Blair Atholl is a personal fav!... http://www.nationalgalleries.org/col...record_id/3341

To the OP, IMHO you'd look silly anywhere other than a RenFaire. Depending on the RenFaire and how seriously they take their clothing, it may look silly there as well. (I've heard that some Faires actually try to be accurate to the time period they're portraying, others, not so much.)

Unfortunately, I had already ordered the waistcoat and shirt when I started getting my kilts last year. Then I discovered this vastly new world of highland dress in the XMarks forums. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Now I feel empowered to be dapper instead of a costume clown.

I have one, purchased at the Tucson Celtic Festival. My wife loves it. I wear it fairly often when I'm more casually kilted. It is very warm and has worked well for me when I've had to go to the orthopedic surgeon (recently broke my ankle) wearing my kilt in 20F to 30F weather. I've received many compliments on my kilts and nearly as many on the vest.

I've seen a few around at the Michigan Renaissance Festival but not often. I hand stitched a plain one for my rennie costume. I attempted to go as traditional as I could within my skills and budget. Made cloth buttons, etc.

I wear it with my great kilt and my traditional tartan kilt.
