Lots of good advice here, so I thank you for your input, and especially Nathan for supplying lots of photos for inspiration.
I know that the jacket works fine on its own, and in the past I've worn it with v-neck pullovers on occasion, but I felt that having the option of a waistcoat would make it more flexible, and a little smarter too.
I'm definitely leaning towards claret/burgundy now, though I shall wait until after I get my new kilt to be sure the whole thing works as an ensemble. Charcoal seems a nice second option, though I much prefer the splash of colour claret/burgundy would bring.
