I have been thinking about this recently. We expect to travel with a low cost airline later this year for a familly event, I'll be kilted at it. As its a short trip we were not planning on checking in luggage, £25 for 20kg, each way. There is a "free" 10kg cabin baggage allowance. My kilt, jacket, shoes, sporran, etc will take up a fair amount of my 10kg allowance, I reckon about half. As it will be a short trip of 4 days, and the Wife will claim some of my 10kg allowance (dont they all?) I resent the additional cost of what will effectively be flying my kilt out and back, so I will be chosing to wear it to fly.As an aside, my son and I were going to Barcelona for a couple of days to see a football match, arrive late friday, return early afternoon on the tuesday. We had a race to see who could pack the fastest, we were only taking the cabin baggage allowance. I won with a time of 50 seconds. the ladies of the house were shocked and did not understand or comprehend how this could be achieved. they said they would expect to spend 1 day planning what to take!!

I believe I would have pointed out that because I didn't have pockets, the sporran was one big pocket to carry my wallet and other pocket stuff in. No different than a purse in function. I wonder how men with gentleman's purses fare on this issue.

I have travelled to many parts of the world-Peru, Scotland, Vienna, Israel, Grand Caymans, Dominican Republic. It from my baggage. I have flown American Airlines, United Airlines, Austrian Airlines, and Delta. I have flown pre-9/11, but mostly post-9/11. I must admit I don't travel kilted because I usually wear the "heaviest outfit and shoes" on the plane to curb some weight from my baggage. My advice is to "pack light and pack right."
What strikes me about travel within and without the US is the fact that we are very strict in our security at airports and ferry terminals when far less has happened to us then say the UK or Israel. Our location in the world has prevented alot from happening to us. There have been no wars on our soil. Not only are we very strict, but we also lack common sense in our security. It doesn't make sense. Bags are checked at random without cause or suspicion. Old ladies and children in wheelchairs are checked and embarrassed by incompetent searches. There have been many breaches in our security protocol and yet they keep things the same. I agree the TSA has a difficult job, but that is not a license to be incompetent. I, as a nurse, do not get to be belligerent or stupid just because I have a difficult job.
It suprises me how the National Security Agency(NSA) listens to the entire world but we cannot weed out actual terrorists and criminals and still need tactics which are deployed by the TSA. Sadly, I agree with those in this thread that say the rules being enforced depend on whether the staff had a bad day. The United States is still a great nation. We have been the light of freedom for so long, but that light is fading. Benjamin Franklin, one of our founding father's, signer of the Declaration of Independence, said "Any nation who sacrifices their freedom for security is worthy of neither." Appears as though he was an intelligent person.
