My Kilted Weekend!
Now I wear my kilt almost every day (thankfully it dries rather quickly after washing), in fact, around my neighbourhood I'm more likely to get a comment if I'm NOT kilted. However, last weekend was a little different so I thought I'd share it here.
Since, Friday was the "end of summer vacation" for my daughter (weekends apparently don't count as actual summer days ), we decided to go to Coney Island and visit the beach. As we were approaching the boardwalk (actually just passing Nathan's hot dogs which are a rather famous part of the Coney Island experience ) a young man outside an ice cream booth called out to me - you know the look, baggy, baggy pants, oversized white tshirt and giant baseball cap turned three-quarters of the way to the back - and asked, "excuse me, that's a kilt right?" followed with "are you...Irish?" I replied that I am Irish-Scot (apparently)-West Indian-Cherokee-African-American but "my kilt is from Seattle". We talked a bit and then the young lady he was chatting up said, "I bet it's comfortable, right?" I assured her it was the most comfortable thing I'd ever put on. I thought my wife would burst with pride (she loves it when I get kilt-flirted by other women)
I have to admit to a certain feeling of superiority as I watched those who weren't in bathing suits rolling up pant legs to try and get a little wet without soaking their pants. Every time I saw someone re-roll his pants, I just waded out a little farther. The cool ocean air felt wonderful and we had a great time.
On Sunday, we decided to take my daughter's bike to the local bike shop to refill her tires. Just as we reached the shop, I heard chuckling behind me. I turned and a man walked up to me and said, "You have to be the most macho guy I've seen all day! I just want to shake your hand!" We both laughed and he went on his way. Later, as we entered the grocery store, two young ladies passed me going in and one said, "Well, you've definitely got the legs for it!" just as another young lady coming out of the store stopped and asked, "Is that a Utilikilt?" My wife looked at me and laughed, "What, is it hit on the kilted guy day?"
An unusual amount of attention, especially this close to home. Of course I had a big smile on my face all afternoon.

That's a great weekend, Mark.
I only hope I get as open a reaction when I start kiltin' about town. I live in a pretty "redneck" area.

Great weekend. Just goes to show the positive influence of a kilt. And, of course, all of us handsome men who sport them.

Great story Mark! It's always great to get that kind of positive affirmation isn't it? It's one thing to get a wave or nod but it's especially great when you have the chance to interact with people like that.
