Well said Chas. I have already stated that I had no problem with what Alan H posted only that I didn't agree that it should be posted on a kilt forum. Indeed if you care to look at the forum rules the mission statement says that this is a kilt forum. Rule 12a further states that the subject of the discussion on this forum is the kilt.

My view is that the original post did not comply with this forums mission statement and that it was in violation of rule 12a. I did not flag the post and I completely agree with Alan as to the abhorrent nature of the subject but in view of the fact that this is a family forum the subject matter was not suitable for a wider audience I felt that it had no place here. I still believe that to be the case.

On a wider note I further believe that we should all be educated about humanities misdeeds so that we can learn from our past and that atrocities such as these will be a thing of the past.

Growing up in the US, and as an adult traveling in the UK, I was told no small number of times that as an American
I should understand that our proudly stated tradition of free speech did not originate with the the rebellion, but was
imported with the people. And indeed, I was told, free speech has a much stronger tradition in England, and greater
latitude in what may be said. My experience here has certainly put paid to such assertions, and they must go into
the trash bin with Washington and the cherry tree; nice teaching story, no fact.

Yes indeed we are a kilt forum and yes indeed we have rules and yes indeed the subject of war crimes is way, way outside the rules. We do not have the power to ignore the rules at xmarksthescot in exceptional cirumstances, even if we so choose. However, if we manage to persuade the owner and moderators to adjust the rules for an exceptional(once in a blue moon) circumstance, then that would be wonderful.

Frankly I am distinctly uneasy in even suggesting that we should vear far away from the subject of the kilt, however, when I consider the topic of war crimes and new information coming forth and then, the umpteen dozen threads about hose colour, or kilt height then well, they really do pale into insignificance in comparison. I am sorry to say that I am disappointed at those that retreat behind the rule excuse and "we are a family friendly website"------appeasement will always fail and always has, when dealing with these evil monsters who have had no rules and the only way to counter them, without going to all out war(which many countries certainly did in1939/45) is by provision of information and education. Knowing about the past and "outing" those individuals and countries that would prefer to ignore the facts,(I do not hold the idea that the present generation should apologise for the misdeeds of past generations) is one way to protect our families and our cosey way of life for now and in the future.

No one is saying, least of all me, the rules need changing for all time, far from it, but surely in exceptional circumstances hiding behind lame excuses just does not do justice to the horrendous historic information that is before some of us, for all to learn about. No one, least of all me, is saying this is an easy problem for us here to solve. Do we just say "well lets leave it to some one else's website" and then stick our heads in the sand? I hope not and I would like to be proud of this website should they choose to lead the way and not to close their eyes, ears and minds over this.

Some wise chap and I hope that I quote him correctly , who's name escapes me for the moment said:-" All it needs for evil to flourish, is for good men to do nothing." History has proved him right far too often.

I would appreciate a simple one or two word naming of the either the conflict, or country and period referred to in the original post, not a rehearsal of its content.

Oh and Jock it was Edmund Burke

We are talking about the war in China with Japan 1936/45.

Oh right, Edmund Burke. Thank you.

    Ah! Thank you Jock!
How we can be on page three of discussion without knowing what it was about says something.
    Yes, a terrible episode.
Yes, kilt issues are the main topic here, but kilts are not bubble wrap, and if we have to be insulated from the past in all its horrific forms, we are indeed sad little people, not at all well positioned to be of much use in preventing such acts in the future.

    Again, thank you Jock.

Likewise, thank you Jock. I'd not have predicted that particular conflict and terrible that there are so many it could have been.

Actually, the link I provided was about one very specific compound, and what went on there. What happened there was horrifying and subhuman. However, what REALLY shook me upn was the fact that I knew nothing about this until three days ago. How could that be? The answer to that question was what was so upsetting to me.

However, I note something interesting here, that I did not expect.

This thread, even sans link, is getting a huge amount of attention here.

I have also posted a thread in this same forum about a new custom sporran that has just been completed for me, to which I have now appended a couple of large pictures. The response of the X Marks community is an enormous shrug of non-interest, indicated by the fact that practically nobody has posted to the thread..

What exactly does this mean, I wonder....
