I have liked the Prince Charlie style since I saw a series of photos on here which showed one worn by theDuke(s) of Argyll over several generations.

I have no ancestral sporran and nary a drop of noble blood. However, I am drawn to both the hair and PC cantle aspects of that particular sporran.

As an aside, Creagdhubh, you noted twice that you never wear yours anymore. Are you thinking of passing it along to the rabble?

    It's definitely a possibility.

Here's me in my old 6 tassel Prince Charlie sporran. I do miss it.

IrishSean, the photos you posted are of long hair sporrans or sporrans moloch. The Prince Charlie sporran is a pouch style sporran with a flap like a day sporran but it's covered in short fur, typically has 6 tassels and the flap is decorated with ornate metal.

Just making sure that if you're looking for one like the Dukes of Argyll, you don't go searching for a Prince Charlie sporran.

Edit: I do recall now that Kyle mentioned his hair sporran had a Prince Charlie cantle. So that's confusing. A Prince Charlie Sporran is a dress sporran with a flap rather than a cantle but a Prince Charlie cantle is a Vicorian Style cantle with a 7 sided polygon shape.

    So...to review:

Those old catalog pics are very cool. Is that the styles they copy today?

Interesting to see Prince Charles as Colonel-in-Chief of The Black Watch.

I usually have seen him, over the years, as the Colonel-in-Chief of The Gordon Highlanders, and in his own words

"The North East of Scotland, the recruiting area of The Gordons, which includes Balmoral, always holds a special place in my heart... I was brought up for a substantial period of my early life surrounded by ex-Gordon Highlanders. It was a great privilege and honour to me when, in 1978, Her Majesty the Queen appointed me as Colonel-in-Chief of The Gordon Highlanders."

In 1994 the Gordons were merged with The Queens Own Highlanders to form The Highlanders (which existed 1994-2006, Colonel-in-Chief Prince Philip, who had been Colonel-in-Chief of The Queens Own Highlanders).

The Queen Mother had been Colonel-in-Chief of The Black Watch, succeeded by Prince Charles (2003).

Now The Queen is Colonel-in-Chief of The Royal Regiment of Scotland, each Battalion with its own Royal Colonel.

He's Colonel-in-Chief of many Regiments I think. Here he is in some of his Highland uniforms.

One is either London or Toronto Scottish...

Very nice, I didn't know he was Colonel-in-Chief of The London Scottish (or is it the Toronto Scottish?)

About his Royal Regiment of Scotland uniform, The Queen is the Colonel-in-Chief of that regiment, he is Royal Colonel of one of the battalions, the former Black Watch.

Anyhow funny that any pentagonal cantle is likely to be called "Prince Charlie". Here are a couple lovely vintage ones on Ebay
