    Orkney/Firth tartan

    Hi,
I'm from New Zealand, my paternal grandmother was from fife district.
However her name firth from her fathers side comes from the orkney islands for hundreds of years.
I feel I should wear the orkney tartan, as I feel this is the most connected with her and me.
I was wondering if the ancient colours/ modern colours are nicer (I'm a guy)
    Opinions wanted!
    here is the ancient colours

The choice of Modern or Ancient colours is entirely down to your own preference. Other people's opinions are just that and as they aren’t going to wear it I recommend not taking too much notice of what they say. As a 'fashion tartan' I have not idea if the Orkney tartan is available from stock but if it is then you would be best served to get hold of some actual samples and view them under a number of different lighting conditions. If it is not available ex-stock then you are looking at a special weave and therefore can have any colour range.

I have to agree with what figheadair says as it coming down to what you alone like. However, that being said I, myself, prefer the tartan in the ancient colors, BUT as it appears to be only available in 10 oz. wool I would opt for the modern in 15 oz. wool. I think that 10 oz. is a little too light weight for a kilt. But that is only my opinion and worth exactly what you paid me.

Modern. When in doubt go with the red. Goes with everything. That from one who prefers his green, (though only by a bit). So much for consistency.

taste is personal, and one should be comfortable within oneself with your choice. personally I think the softer colours look great and if the weight was 13oz, 15 or 16 oz the decision would be made, the lightest kilt I have is 13 oz and that creases much more than the heavier weights so unless you are going to be highland /country dancing might be too light for a gents practical kilt. So the option then is a custom weave more expensive because it's not off the peg so to speak but you get what you want and it's
    unique.

Nevermind the dominant colour. Think of your kilt like jeans (bear with me). Most jeans are blue but we wear them with things that don't really 'go' with blue without a second thought, right?

Thus your kilt, regardless of the tartan, goes with everything equally.
Just wear it at your natural waist instead of where most people wear jeans. It will take some getting used to but it will look better.

It all boils down to personal preference, though.
