    Daywear outfit

Is it considered a fashion faux pas to go out to dinner in the evening in daywear attire? I have a new tweed argyll jacket that I was considering wearing tonight when I take my wife out for a nice Valentine's dinner. I don't really want to go all formal, but don't want to be too casually attired either. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Unless the restaurant is a VERY formal place, I would see no problem with wearing an Argyle jacket with a kilt when going out for an evening meal.
Admittedly my personal experience is mostly limited to Scotland but when visiting USA I have been out to dinner in the evening wearing a kilt with an Argyle jacket on several occasions.

Unless it's a black tie type of place then I totally agree with Alex above. A tweed jacket is the equivalent of a smart suit so perfectly acceptable wear for a restaurant.

I can only speak for the US and it is my impression that the distinction between day wear and evening wear has become blurred. Standards have slipped and finding men in any type of a jacket at a nice restaurant is a pleasant occurrence. Formal attire would make you stand out (not necessarily a bad thing.) I am going to a good restaurant tonight followed by the ballet. With my kilt I am wearing a navy Argyll jacket and long tie. I would be surprised if half the men in either location are even wearing jackets.

A kilt and a tweed Argyll jacket - I suspect that you will be better dressed than most of the other patrons. Go for it.

Go for it! I will be wearing the exact same style when I take my good lady out to dine tonight.

A tweed argyll sounds exactly right for the venue. I notice you are fairly new to the forum so I hope you enjoy it here. I would suggest taking a look at the 1 kilt 10 looks thread for ideas of various outfits and when they are appropriate. Here is the link:

I'd bet my house he would...

then again, I live in Florida - evening wear here is the good flip-flops and your Hawaiian floweredy shirt is mostly buttoned. (I've been in restaurants where I felt overdressed and I was wearing blue jeans and a concert t-shirt.)

Sometimes evening wear will even forego the flip flops if a walk on the beach is in the offing! My goal is to wear my kilts in the relaxed, casual atmosphere that is Florida, and I think I mostly accomplish my goal.
