Kilted On Campus
I wore my kilt yesterday to school, and forgot that I was supposed to man the Visual Media Guild's booth at the Student Activitites Fair. I've worn my kilt to school plenty of times, but I've never gotten as many comments as I did yesterday.
First, I had two girls come up to me with embarassed looks on their faces. They told me that they really liked the kilt, and then one of the girls blushed and asked if I knew what "regimental" meant. I told her I did, but that no, I wasn't. She instantly said, "Yeah, there are 20 mph winds today, so that could be embarassing."
Then, some guy came up to me with that look on his face like he really wants to say something. I thought for sure he was going to make a comment about the kilt, when he tells me that I have a cool Kangol hat on! I don't think he even noticed I was wearing a kilt!
Later at the booth, some guy came up and started talking to me about clans and stuff like that. He told me he was from clan Kerr, and couldn't afford a kilt. He then proceeded to take his shirt off and show me his huge Kerr coat of arms tattoo across his back. He then got all embarassed because there were about a 100 people staring at him, and he left before I could tell him about cheaper kilts. I'll have to try to find him later on campus.
Finally, I met a friend of a friend that made my day with his comment. He said, "It's good to see a guy wearing a real kilt for once. I keep seeing these guys wearing their girlfriend's pleated skirt and thinking they're wearing a kilt. They look so stupid, but your kilt looks great!"
Our booth ended up being really popular, but I'm not sure if it was because of the kilt, or because we had s number of framed cels that were used in the Simpsons shows. Our advisor used to be an animator for the show. Either way, we got people interested.
So, a pretty good day overall.

Kilted on Campus (KOC)
Rufus,
I will be KOC in a few weeks, as I have to give a presentation on Scottish immigration to the Sophomore Seminar class on immigration -- I will also be wearing the full "kit" to our annual Remembrance (Veterans) Day service on 11 November, complete with my Poppy badge.
I haven't worn my kilt to work yet, but everyone else here in library keeps asking me about it. I wore it at the two libraries I worked at prior to this job, and I always got very positive comments, or no one paid attention, proving that libraries are bastions of tolerance and liberty.
Maybe we should start some sort of "Kilted on campus" club?
Cheers,
T.

Sound like you had a fantastic day Rufus.
The kilt was definatly a draw and, what comments. You must have had a real laugh.
Your teacher didn't animate the kilted scene ...did he.
Thanks for sharing....David

I don't know if my professor did the kilted scene or not. He hasn't said anything to me about it, so that might have happened when he was working on Ren and Stimpy.

Works for me! You, me, Miah, and Rigged could be the charter members.

Anyone else out there "on campus" as a student, staff and/or faculty?

Yeah, I'm in tech support at the Stanford University Libraries.
I do a lot of direct user support and work in our general undergrad computing clusters, and this often means crawling around on the floor to hook up wiring and such. Ergo, a kilt is not necessarily the most appropriate article of clothing for my job. However, there are days when I'm in meetings or hustling bigwings around campus (I'm the most articulate geek in the group, so I get these jobs) and on those days I could easily wear a kilt.
In fact, I'm looking forward to it.

Nothing but respect for you tech support people. The way folks use computers, etc. at libraries today, you folks are truly godsends for those of us who are not so up-to-date on all things technological.
I think we may have something here...
Cheers, (b)

I've worn my kilt around campus a bit, and I think that a university campus is the safest place to do anything out of the ordinary. People expect to be surprised there.
PS: Ren and Stimpy! Joy!

Rufus, way to go It amazes me that some people do not really respond to the kilt but say something about other items of apparel such as shoes or headgear. I have helped out at various booths at street fairs, nothing but positives. Don't ya just love it?
Even though I am not affiliated with an institute of higher education, when I walk around on University of Denver's campus I get nothing but smiles and cool kilt dude comments, I just love it
Good job Rufus!!!!

Libraries in general, and Univeristy libraries in particular are in fact, hotbeds of general tolerance and open mindedness.
....except when it comes to not returning stuff!
