I picked up the first book at a second hand store and am enjoying it quite a bit.

The author, Diana Gabaldon, has announced that she will be having a bit part in the STARZ production. She is not revealing what part, nor what she will be wearing, other than the statement that wearing stays results in very good posture, and she will be having an accent coach......

Do not be "put off" by any of the arbitrary classifications/labels you might hear, about these books. The writing is great - she has spoiled me for reading most anything else. She brings her characters alive in a way seldom found. I've been a constant reader, from an early age, and finding such skill in characterization is rare. Well worth reading! ( I couldn't stand the audio books, and fear the tv series might "ruin it" for me ... If I ever stumble across it, not having cable ,or an HD TV ) ;0)

My only question concerns language, nudity, and sexual themes. Just hoping for "adult entertainment" that won't curl the ears. The series sounds great though.

I am a HUGE fan of the series (seven books published with the eighth due out in July 2014)--and the unholy number of Outlander-related Facebook groups I belong really does border on ridiculous. I skimmed this thread quickly, so apologies if this information was already posted, but the lead actors are Sam Heughan (hails from Dumfriesshire, Scotland!) and Caitriona Balfe, who is a Irish former runway and editorial model. If you're interested in seeing their obvious chemistry, they've released several videos through Starz, TV Guide and Entertainment magazine outlets. They really seem to legitimately get on well with each other and have an easy rapport that I certainly hope will come through on screen.

I'm going to stop now before I really start gushing and being all weird.

I looked through this thread to see what others thought of Tobias' casting. I must say that I look forward to his villainy. I am assuming that we'll get leads that are somewhat watered down by having to please every demographic, but will turn in good performances. What will be the glue is the hatred most people will share for Tobias. And he will be great at cultivating that villainy, methinks.
