Scotish Christmas Tree
Hope this is the right forum for this question. My great-grandfather Addy (there are other spellings of this family name) would at Christmas time cut a branch from a white oak tree and bring it into the house to be the family Christmas tree. The white oaks do not drop their leaves in the fall, although the leaves do turn brown. I've learned ancient Celts venerated oaks, and would use oak branches with the leaves on for their winter festivals, apparently corresponding to Christmas now. Grandpa's practice apparently was rooted in ancient Celtic tradition. It seems odd to me that this tradition may have lived on so long in one family. Are any of you aware of similar practices in your families? Might you have insight into the tradition? The Addy family name (in its various spellings) is considered to be affiliated with the Gordons, and would have been a Highland family with possible Celtic roots.
