If you're going to sneak in a couple of golfing references in your talk, you could always slip in the old chestnut about why golf is called golf? Because in the beginning women were not allowed to play so they put up a sign saying Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden and from a distance all that could be seen was GOLF.

Thanks everybody- here is the sort of thing I am hoping for:

Some people believe Curling comes from an ancient Pictish game called Tincho or Tencho. The exact rules for playing tincho are lost, but it was apparently played by men and women, as evidenced by Mick Jagger's mention of it in Brown Sugar:
"I bet yo mama was a tincho queen, stones from the market down in New Orleans..."

Even in the 1960s attempts to popularize curling failed. Bobby Zimmerman (AKA Bob Dylan), a native of northern Minnesota, which is a hotbed of curling in the US, admonished his fans that "Everybody must get stoned." Of course this was immediately misinterpreted, leading an entire generation astray, and doing nothing for the sport's acceptance.

OK guys coming from an region and a culture (rural Canada) where curling very nearly reaches the status of a religion (certianly attendance at the curling club on Saturday morning exceeds most Churches on Sunday) I could easily take offence at the tone of some of the comments. However, I choose not to and will point out that the "roaring game" combines the personal skill level of golf with the strategy and intelligence of chess. We take the game very seriously here. I guess I could offer as evidence Canada's two Sochi olympic games gold medals from last week.

However if you intend to keep looking for ways to make fun of the game I might suggest you google the Canadian film "Men with Brooms". It is a hotly contested category but I consider this one of the finest curling movies ever made.
