But grown men (in the west) don't wear red as an everyday color for business clothing- unless they are sports commentators or theatre ushers. Is it too sporty, too festive, or just too gaudy?
There is still a very conservative mindset that well-dressed men simply do not go for gaudy colours, lest they be thought of as flamboyant (with unpleasant connotations). So it's still rather "fashion-forward" to go for bright colour jackets.
Not a kilt-cut, but found this; $300 @ Paul Frederick. Not my style, but not bad looking.

I don't think I have enough to pull of a red jacket, I quite like the look of the Red Doublet above (burns supper?) but couldn't do it myself. I do have a jacket and waistcoat with a red lining and backing on the waistcoat which I like, but I do feel self conscious when I take my jacket off.

I could go for a shade of blue if I had to pick a colour different than the norm or perhaps a really dark blood red colour... Now I think about it I can see the attraction.

Red just won't work with my Ancient Dunbar kilt [orange/green] and we've all seen the orange PC that shows up on evil-bay from time to time. I think maroon or burgundy would work, but not red. I decided to go with silver-gray for my PC. Rondo

I have red shorts (the Danish Crown Prince is known to also wear red shorts), red sweaters, red ties, red flashes, and red kilts (Royal Stewart and MacGregor red modern). But I never was attracted to wear a red jacket. To me too much uniform or just not ‘right’.
I might wear red jeans, but not red socks. And I never wear caps whatever the color.

I'm (somewhat) contemplating a jacket and/ or waistcoat in Manx and Hebridean diamond twill:

But part of me thinks waistcoat only, as a contrast to other colours... I think the jacket could look good, especially with my Manx Blue tartan, but it may verge on "clown" territory, which could be a costly mistake. I do like the idea of a burgundy velvet doublet though, if I had the reason to wear it.

    Cheers,

I agree that the opportunities to properly display a red jacket may be limited. That said, they do "make a statement" on those occasions. To wit:

Well well well. That is lovely tweed from Ardalanish, I have to agree. Once I get some photography done, I can show you the Sheriffmuir and waistcoat I had made in just this material. Nothing clown-like about it at all. It will go well with the kilt I will make in the Australia tartan. You have good taste, sir!

A similar (a bit like a "russet" coloured tweed) hue to that of the gentleman (second from the left, front row) seen speaking with Ian Campbell, 12th and 5th Duke of Argyll in the photo below (circa 1970s), during the annual Argyllshire Gathering and march to Mossfield Park for the Oban Games. This would be about as far "red" as I would be willing to go in regards to Highland day attire. And, the jacket would most definitely have to be tweed. However, I will say, that this particular shade of a reddish-brown would probably not fair so well with red-based tartans (no matter the colour scheme). I think it would look far better with green-based tartans as shown in the photo.
