Hello from Memphis, TN
Hello everyone. I've always been interested in kilts and have looked at them online and dreamed of owning and wearing one. I have Scottish and Welsh ancestors (still doing genealogy on them).
I just ordered an Olive Kilt from AmeriKilt ( http://www.amerikilt.com/shop/amerikilts/olive/ ) along with a belt. I ordered two different hoses (black and lovat blue) and some red flashes.
I'm extremely hot natured and have always envied that women get to wear skirts with all that free air flow. I'm finally claiming my Scottish ancestry and going to wear a kilt. My plan is to work up to wearing one full time in place of pants. Even to work, which might be a small fight to achieve but I believe I can achieve it. I work for the State as a social worker. Our office does have a dress code policy and it is gender specific. It does allow skirts for women so I think I can argue that it is sex/gender discrimination and they will back off. We'll see how it goes. I'll start off with wearing on a casual Friday. I've already been talking it up at work to get reactions. Co-workers seem fine with it.

Hi and a warm welcome from sunny Queensland!
Good luck with your kilt wearing plans at the office. Tread carefully, HR can be a P.I.T.A.! Be very cautious with the discrimination approach, it can backfire. But approached slowly and "Casual Fridays" is a great start, you may succeed. They may insist that you don't wear the kilt with clients. I first got approval to wear my kilt at work when attending business conferences, specifically so that I could be found easily! It's a case of finding what works in your situation. Good luck!
Regards, Sav.

A Very Warm And Hearty Welcome from a fellow kilt-wearer with Scots-Irish roots in Kentucky and Tennessee. I recommend that you follow my personal motto for wearing the kilt--Wear It Proudly, Wear It Correctly, Wear It Like You Mean It. It is a versatile, distinctive, respected, practical and comfortable garment, suitable for nearly all occasions. I wear my kilt to the office quite regularly, did not consult with anyone prior, and absolutely dared anyone to object--but then I'm employed by a global organization founded in Chicago by a Scots-Irish American whose wife was from Edinburgh, has an extremely distinguished Scottish executive officer, AND its own official tartan. As WillowEstate advises, Casual Fridays are a perfect place to start, but for serious meetings with clients, etc., business suits with trousers are always requisite, even in Scotland where kilts are primarily worn only for national holidays, Highland Games, formal events, Burns Dinners, weekends in the country, etc.
With time and experience, you will find your own "How And When", and if/when you need guidance and support, look no further--you'll never find a finer group of gentlemen (and ladies) than the X Markers.
Best Regards,
DyerStraits
