That looks to be a great event! We have a Macpherson contingent that marches every year. I hope to make it one day!

I also like to wear striped ties with my kilt, among them, an ABF:

It comes highly recommended by my colleagues at the St. Andrew's Society of Albany (http://www.standrewssocietyalbany.org/), many of whom will attend. In fact, it is the culmination of tartan week in the city, which I take it to mean more than a week: http://nyctartanweek.org/. We're taking the Megabus from Albany down early, and coming home on it late, for a total for the wee lass and I of all of $42. I figure lunch and dinner will run $150. We have friends staying overnight, and while I wish I could do that, I am pleased just to get down there for a day. If the weather is absolutely terrible, we'll not attend, and lose our $42, but it seemed worth risking.

    Cheers!

Sounds wonderful, Frank. If the weather is crap, head into a nearby pub and celebrate with a dram or two!

Frank will have a wee flask with him, but cover does sound good! CCS-NA keeps threatening me with a commissioner position of some kind as well... We'll see how that goes. Retirement is looking better and better!

    I agree 100%, Geoff.

I think that the USMC tartan is one of the most iconic there is and I would dearly love a kilt in that tartan,

    but,

I am ex RAF and cannot bring myself to wear it - not in good conscience.

Wow, incredible stuff. I'll keep them in mind. The website definitely whispers Quality and I'm sure their prices reflect high product and service value.

The issue of school ties raises a question of protocol. I spent my third year of university at Exeter in southwestern England and unlike the university I actually took my degree from here in the US, Exeter University does currently sell a necktie with the school colors (green and white--good kilt colors!) and seal. Would it be appropriate for me to wear it even though I was only a "visiting" student?

I would say most definitely - Yes.

My brother is ex-USMC. He likes the tartan but has a qualm with it not being 'official' in a way. He'd actually wear that over one of our family tartans...if he were to ever own a kilt (which is unlikely, although he digs the leatherneck tartan a lot).

Here we have the classic situation of smoke and mirrors of the unwritten conventions of; "its just not done" or in this case;" it is done."

Your brother served as a Marine so it would be perfectly correct for him to wear the leatherneck tartan. Whereas it would be "not done" for me so to do. Written rules do not exist in these situations, just like the regimental tie situation, and relies on the descretion of the public at large to do the "right thing".
