My two cents, for what it is worth. I have never been a fan of baseball-style caps (how un-American of me!). But they do seem to be the norm in North America, and they were very popular in Korea when I was living there. And I don't think I would criticize anyone for wearing one with a kilt, it just isn't to my taste.

I have some brimmed hats similar to the Outback style hats which I will wear with my kilts on sunny days. I wear a flat cap (driving type) with my kilts quite often, but I don't curl the bill. I have a bonnet I wear on occasion, but mostly to Highland events where bonnets are more frequently seen.

I usually go without an hat for the most part. I like leaving my hair down when dressing casual. That being said, I normally pull it back when a tie is involved. I only have one hat that I wear whilst kilted (for non-reenactment purposes) and that is a strange custom balmoral-like hat that I wear on dressier occasions. But I feel that here in the USA where traditions are dictated by what people chose to do more than what has been done, preference makes all the difference. Let's face it; even though there are those of us that value and even cherish traditions from the "Old World" (hope that term doesn't offend anyone), we citizens of the USA have a way of making things our own. I see flat caps as being an example of this. I have seen them worn with kilts and thought nothing of it until I joined this forum, and I still see nothing to get in a bind over. Honestly, I still think they look fine as an option. I feel that the hat should match (gasp) the outfit. If wearing a T-shirt with hiking boots, a baseball cap would be fine. However, if you are one step above that in terms of dressiness, then the hat should reflect that. In such case, I would say flat cap. In all good truth, the only hat that I have seen worn on here that can't get behind is the pith helmet. But even then I say, "To thine own style be true."

Indeed. I could have just kept my thought to myself, but what fun is that?

Wait. Is this post from the same guy whose thread about the jacket he'd wear with a kilt to go hiking ran to multiple pages?

All this talk of "American" baseball caps overlooks all the Scottish ones!

I would post a photo, but in decency I cannot.

Google 'Glasgow neds' under 'images' and you'll see...

(the wearing of baseball caps always seems to be accompanied by rude hand gestures in Glasgow)
