Okay. I've recently had to look up the Scottish term, "Neds." It seems an equivalent to the term "thugs" in the USA.

I'm not sure that's an endorsement for the ball caps. I don't think the wearing of the baseball cap by American pipe bands after parade is comparable.

That may be the root of our different impressions of this "style."

I like a baseball cap. It shades my eyes in the sun and in the rain it keeps my glasses dry.

Perhaps this might be a good compromise?

Much as I roll my eyes at the immaturity of the baseball cap as a style, I also wonder sadly about our wisdom in using pictures as references when they're so over-ripe. I guess I prefer to limit my style choices to at most "remembered history" while still rejecting those things that have not yet proved themselves.

I have several hats I wear, none of which are baseball caps (have several, but don't like to wear them in general). My kilted hat dress varies from a Balmoral, to a tweed Irish walking hat, to a GI issue boonie hat, depending on venue and weather. Down here in the sunny and often damp South, my preference for summer is the boonie. My take is, unless you're going formal, wear what you like.

It does work well. Looks great!

However, in modern, urban life, I frequently wear a gore-tex rain jacket with hood, and baseball style cap when it rains, kilted or not. Keeps you dry and your glasses somewhat so. The back flap of the deerstalker would interfere with the hood. Umbrellas around here are frequently turned inside out by the wind, so not a great option. Plus the cap comes off once you are inside anyway.

I think we are talking about in this post is what to wear to the Tartan Day NYC festivities in 2014. Perhaps at highland games, or other outdoor event, especially in the country, I would agree on taking it up a notch and going with a deerstalker or tilley, if not a balmoral. But as Jock recommends, I generally am hat-less whilst kilted unless it's really bright out or raining. Then sometimes practicality trumps style.

Jock's wisdom is generally unquestionable, but you need adjust it to the setting from whence it emanates. Jock lives in Inverness, where "really bright out" equilibrates to dusk or dawn on an overcast day for most of us, "raining out" is the norm, fish-belly white is what passes for normal flesh tone, and "tan" is a shade of brown reserved for leather goods and khakis.
