It does work well. Looks great!
However, in modern, urban life, I frequently wear a gore-tex rain jacket with hood, and baseball style cap when it rains, kilted or not. Keeps you dry and your glasses somewhat so. The back flap of the deerstalker would interfere with the hood. Umbrellas around here are frequently turned inside out by the wind, so not a great option. Plus the cap comes off once you are inside anyway.
I think we are talking about in this post is what to wear to the Tartan Day NYC festivities in 2014. Perhaps at highland games, or other outdoor event, especially in the country, I would agree on taking it up a notch and going with a deerstalker or tilley, if not a balmoral. But as Jock recommends, I generally am hat-less whilst kilted unless it's really bright out or raining. Then sometimes practicality trumps style.
Looks like the knit cap won out anyway
