I am going to suggest something far more radical - Paisley.
As in Paisley in Scotland, where the design was first produced in the UK. If you want history and heritage and a design that goes back beyond kiltwearing as we know it today, them Paisley is the way to go.
As an aside I would not consciously wear a button down collar without a tie - I don't think it looks finished. Different strokes ...

Try this link... http://www.peterchristian.co.uk/knitted-silk-tie I still have a few of my knit ties from the 60's and still enjoy wearing them. I've also bought a number of them new from Peter Christian. They are an exceptionally reputable company (like Orvis and LL Bean, they have a no quibbles full return policy - they even pick up the cost of shipping items back for the refund/exchange). They have a broader than usual range of colours and striped patterns in knit ties - in either 100% Wool, or 100% Silk. The Silk ones are very fine to the touch and very easy to knot. The depth and richness of colour is amazing - the photos simply just don't capture how beautiful they actually are. Have a snoop around their site. I'm sure you'll find several ties to choose from that would really complement your sharp new shirt.
BTW... their Harris Tweed Jackets are also exceptionally well made - fully silk lined, with real leather buttons - and not too hard on the budget.
Everything in the Peter Christian stock is of sufficient quality to please even the most discerning of Gentlemen.

Just had a root roon the link to the rest of the catalogue - they don't seem to be advertising their usual full range of the selection of silk and wool knit ties just now. It may be a seasonal thing (though I wear mine a year roon in Scotland). From past experience, PC will discuss the FULL range via email, or telephone, regardless of the season, and send you pictures and details of the full range upon request. Some of the "out of season" stuff may even be nicely discounted. They love to bundle their goods in two-fer deals. I am almost certain that I have seen a sophisticated Lavender striped silk knit tie in their collection in past catalogues which may be just what your're looking for. Solid Lavender in varying shades are also part of the usual range.

Wow! Thanks, gentlemen! I really appreciate the suggestions. Paisley? I like paisley and in tie...there's an idea. I've seen them many times but haven't ever worn a paisley tie.
:thumbs up:

Knit ties never really went away, but yes they have become more popular again recently so should be easier to find. I have several new knit ties and would think about wearing one with this shirt. I do agree with you about button down shirts I am not a huge fan of them but think they are fine for a more casual country look, so yes with a tweed jacket would be my recommendation as well.

I'm coming in a tad late here, but try the tie bar for knits, paisleys, and custom. http://www.thetiebar.com
They have a seemingly endless selection, and the custom option is great if you have a group that wants ties with their name, logo, arms, etc.

Actually, I've seen knit ties in the department stores ... Dillards, Macys ... and the smaller stores like Banana Republic and Express Men. I think they are coming back around here in the US.

Here is an old thread where we discussed knit ties, with several photo examples.

I know what they are. It just never occurred to me to wear one as I usually wear a striped tie of some sort or other. I could easily be persuaded to invest in a knit tie.
Thank you for your advice, men. Good advice, at that!
;-)
I have a feeling that this shirt would look odd kilted. I feel like it is too close to a tartan pattern and would look out of place.
