The following is from Black: The Surnames of Scotland:
Profet, Profat, Profeit.
William Propheta was charter witness in Aberdeen in 1281 and John Profite was admitted burgess of the same burgh, 1446. Thom Profit appears as "mair of the quarter of Brechin" and sheriff-depute of Forfar in 1473. Alexander Perfat in Dundee was charged with aiding the English in 1552.
