Thanks for the info. My kin came through Cape Breton Island during the clearances too. Does the university have a bookstore that sells gear with their logo? Seems perfect to wear with a kilt.

Found the CBU bookstore but they offer few garments and none with that new logo... Maybe there's another place that sells this gear??

The colors match nicely, but I believe the "fiery head" kilt is being worn backwards.

The mascot is the Highlander but the team is called the Capers. Now Queen's University calls their teams the Gaels, so there is that...

If you're talking about in the graphic design, I don't see it. If you're talking about on the mascot costume, it just has a very narrow apron...

It's more than just a rebranding. In Canada, universities and colleges are specific entities. During the CCB era, the College operated as a satellite of St.FX with no autonomy or degree granting privileges. As UCCB, the University was semi-autonomous with the capability of granting degrees through St.FX. As UCB, the University will be able to grant it's own degrees. Congrats to UCB for the designation!
My daughter has just gone through the process of picking a university and the choice in this province is amazing. Nova Scotians love education and at one time had more universities per capita than any other province.

That's almost accurate. As UCCB, it granted its own degrees as that was the significant part of adding the U to CCB. But as UCCB it also granted vocational school/College diplomas which I'm not sure they still do.

You're correct. I had been basing that knowledge on wording only. University College generally means just as I said, however, a quick check (which I should have done instead of jumping to conclusion) says that UCCB was both a university and a college. In becoming CBU, they divested the college part to NSCC and no longer grant diplomas.
To those who may think this is a just a matter of words, should know that in Canada, universities grant degrees, colleges grant diplomas and both are governed by provincial Acts. Universities are generally places of academic study and colleges are generally trades and technology. There are overlaps of course and there are quite a few universities that have affiliated academic colleges.

I'm sure this is still the case. With a population of only about 940,000, Nova Scotia has no fewer than 10 autonomous universities and university-level institutions: Cape Breton U., St. Francis Xavier U., Acadia U., Université Sainte-Anne, Dalhousie U., St. Mary's U., Mount St. Vincent U., King's College U., Atlantic School of Theology, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. In addition, NS has the Nova Scotia Community College offering diploma programs. For universities alone, this works out to slightly more than one for every 100,000 of population.

So here are your tartan clad Canadian University Mascots:
The Cape Breton University Highlander
Caper.jpg
McFog the Dog from Simon Fraser University
mcfog.jpg
Boo Hoo the Bear from Queen's. This mascot role used to be filled by a real bear at one time. I am unclear as to whether he wore the Royal Stewart Tartan in those days.
