New sporran

I have quite the collection of sporrans now. Early on, I found I liked Rob Roy sporrans for casual wear. After buying a couple very simple (cheap) sporrans, I got a black one to match my kilt and dark gray and black accessories. Then I got a brown kilt jacket, so needed a few more things. The sporran, made by Sons of Plunder, an Etsy vendor, came yesterday and will do just fine. I need to make a matching sporran belt for it, and hope soon to get a brown waistcoat.

Frank: A most unusual sporran. Do you have to untie/tie it every time you access its contents? It looks well made though. Can't wait to see it in a pic in vivo.

John, it's a Rob Roy. It's like the black one I have had a while. There's a loop goes over the big Celtic button on the flap. Sometimes I pull it tight, sometimes I tie a bow. Same with the drawstring for the bag. If I'm in & out of the sporran a lot, I leave it untied & just pulled tight. Otherwise I tie it. I like the Rob Roy's because you can stuff so much in them.

I hope to get an estimate from my local tailor this week for a brown wool waistcoat. I still need to make a couple kilt belts, one for the kilt, one for the sporran. Busy fellow!

Frank: Now I get it. I have a black "Rob Roy" style from the Scottish Tartans Museum (though they no longer carry it) with a closure system something like yours. I usually just slip the loop of leather on/off the antler button on the flap. It works well and, as you write, holds a lot of stuff. Good luck with your custom waistcoat.

One of my questions about waistcoats is why can't they be made completely of wool, i.e., just line the inside, but wool all around so it could be worn appropriately without a jacket? Or is that a kilt police no-no?

Frank: They can, and do, make waistcoats completely out of wool.

They lose that "card dealer" or "pit boss" look and (to me) look a bit more like a jacket or sweater. I don't see any reason they wouldn't "work" with a kilt. The might be a bit warm on your back, though, if they were covered with a jacket, so they might work best in cold climes.
