    Weight of wool?

OK. Here is a question that I would like to have answered. How do you tell what weight a particular piece of wool is? I have some very nice wool that i purchased at an estate sale and would like to know what it is.

    Thanks,

    Stoff

We measure fabric in ounces per fabric yard. One fabric yard is one yard long by 60 inches wide or equal to 2160 square inches.

Measure the length and width of your piece in inches. Multiply the length times the width. This will give you the square inches of your fabric.

Divide your square inches by 2160. This will give you how many fabric yards you have.

Then find a scale. A postal scale is nice. Weigh your fabric in ounces.

The weight of your fabric will be in ounces per fabric yard.

For example - If your fabric is 144 inches long and 60 inches wide you have 8640 square inches. 144 inches X 60 inches = 8640 square inches.

    8640 square inches / 2160 square inches = 4 fabric yards.

If your fabric weighs 64 ounces you have 16 ounce fabric. 64 ounces / 4 fabric yards = 16 ounces per fabric yard.
