Kilted in Fredericksburg, TX (on vacation)
I was a safe distance from home for my first (very) casual kilted evening on the town. We took a motorcycle trip to the Texas Hill Country over a long weekend and some friends insisted on getting a few pictures before dinner. No, I didn't ride in the kilt... yet.
This is the basic Original Sport Kilt in the All Ireland Tartan (my wife's family is Irish) with a budget sporran, and a sold black polo style shirt. I realize the wide black belt doesn't match my current brown riding boots... I could only pack so much on the bike, so cut me some slack there.
I think the kilt is a little high on the knee and a little low on the waist, but for an inexpensive off-the-rack introductory experiment... it is what it is. I'm sure some of the purists on the forums will be able to offer plenty of great advice to help guide me down this path.
After overcoming the initial nervousness I thoroughly enjoyed the comfort afforded by the kilt. After all, I went "regimental"... gotta do that part right, eh?
I'm still learning, and I plan to acquire a more traditional kilt in the future. I just wanted to share my first experience on this board.
Happy Kilting!

Sounds like you had a good first outing. Congratulations. That's a great casual outfit. Thanks for posting the pic. Brown boots look fine with a black belt, ... unless you (or your wife) don't think so.
It's hard to tell from the darkness of the picture, but it does looks like your kilt is a tad short, but as you know, a custom kilt is a good bit more expensive. If you hang around the XMTS forum long enough, you'll be much more knowledgeable and more certain of your opinions, when you order your "more traditional kilt in the future". You are approaching your kilted experience in the right way, ie gaining experience. Kilt on!
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Since I live not too far from there, I think your attire was fine for Fredericksburg. It is always good to hear you were pleased with your first time out. In all my kilt wearing I have never had a bad experience. Generally you will get compliments, especially from women, and occasionally a question about kilts. There is a Scottish Festival coming up soon in Arlington - a perfect time to get more kilt wearing experience and a chance to meet several of the XMTS members.
