Alan,
The little buttons that you refered to are called gauntlet buttons.

Update. Got the bill from DHL, $103, based on a tariff of 7.3% on clothing. Basically took a month for the bill to show up.
Now, off to get a Dirk....

Thanks for the update. 7.3% sounds like a bargain, though, of course, better yet would to have not received any bill at all. I had my fingers crossed for you.

The lace cuffs ("soup dippers" the KA staff calls them) are velcro'ed around your wrists. They hang halfway down your fingers. I found that mine were slipping beyond that, so I cut little buttonholes in the top part of the cuffs and button them to the second button on the shirt sleeve (the little one above your wrist). That keeps them from sliding down too far).
I used to do a lot of display Scottish Country and Highland dancing work with the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, and (before the days of velcro) I attached my lace cuffs inside the sleeves of the Montrose Doublet with light tacking stitches. They were then always at the correct length (and could easily be removed for laundering) - it also meant that one could get away with just a T-shirt under the doublet which was much cooler!
The Montrose jacket fits tightly around your waist at belly button height. It goes over the top edge of the kilt. The jacket has beltloops, and that's where you wear your belt, to keep the bottom of the jacket down, and not riding up. However, the kilt then slides down, and your shirt starts popping out between the jacket and kilt. To solve the problem, I used clip on suspenders (braces) to hold the kilt up, then buttoned up and belted up the jacket. I walked around, sat down, stood up, etc., and it seemed to work well.
Ah, my Montrose Doublet came with two elasticated loops sewn inside at the back. These had small hooks at the bottom which could then be engaged in two corresponding loops sewn inside the back of the kilt. That worked extremely well, especially with all the arm actions that come with Highland dancing!
BTW, does anybody know if the Fly Plaid is supposed to go through or over the epaulet on the jacket? It seems to me it should through. (the Plaid does have a little elastic loop that attaches to the epaulet button).
The fly plaid is usually worn tucked through the epaulet on the left shoulder and is then pinned to the front of doublet/jacket with a plaid brooch about four inches (or so) down from the epaulet. The epaulet will stop the fly plaid from slipping off the shoulder.
I hope that helps.

Customs
I ordered my kilt, oh, about a year ago and got a full package deal. The people I ordered from, e-kilts, just shipped it and had a sticker on the package declaring the contents. It got here in about two weeks, I got a bill from customs for about $50, and that was that. I had no problem with that shipping.
Also in my international travels, I've had little problem with customs officials. I've never paid a tarriff-except on my kilt outfit.
To put in a good word for my kiltmaker, E-kilts did a great job on the kit and kept me in the loop during it's production. The customer service was exceptional and they followed up for a few weeks to make sure I was satisified with the product. They have pretty good package deals and are still my preference for a hand sewn wool kilt.

I have finally received a refund from the US Treasury for the $101 I was charged over and above what I legally owed.

Mychael,
I hope you put it into your new kilt fund
