    Formal wear...

I wear Black Watch and was thinking of ordering an Argyll jacket and vest for those formal occasions when my full military look is not suitable. I am considering a navy color vs the traditional black color so prevalent in scottich formal wear. Thoughts?

I think that it depends on the event. If it is solidly a 'black tie' event then black or blue/black (what used to be called policeman's blue) is what is called for. If one deviates then all too quickly, it can end up looking like 'prom night', where anything goes.

If the event is below black tie then far greater latitude is allowed and probably expected to some degree. But if one goes too avant garde, there is the danger of others whispering 'He's wearing THAT jacket again!'

Well thankfully, I do not attend all that many "Formal" events so I can avoid the intense scrutiny of how I'm dressed. I can not in fact recall a social occasion for some time where I was required to attend and in formal attire. I guess I'm thinking more of a general dressed up look where a suit and tie would normally suffice, or one just wants a dressier look. If i wish to stand out and be noticed I'll wear my full dress "Dress 1.jpgScarlets", and no one ever seems to get tired of that. ;-)

If you want the kilted equivalent of saxon suit and tie, consider a tweed jacket, with or without a waistcoat. Something like this, perhaps (I'm the guy in the jacket.)

I think you should take a look at the 1 kilt 10 looks thread. A couple of us did this a few years ago to show different formalities with 1 kilt.

I'd agree that tweed is a good choice for casual to semi formal and very versatile. Realistically I'd get more use out of a casual jacket vs a formal rig. Being recently reintroduced to a kilt, I'm still trying to decide how much wear I'll get out of it and how much I want to invest in accessories considering the limited option for wear. I have several options for a military look, for local events, but there are only so many and I do have other unifrom options as well so it seems more costumes than events. ;-)
