I too would order two of the lower philabegs over the traditional. If you are just starting out wearing kilts, it would be better to add two kilts to your waredrobe. Once you have become accustomed to wearing kits and have gathered all the accessories, than order some of the nicer models of kilts.
Douglas sure is a nice tartan. I have some Douglas in my family, so that will be added to the list for sure, and I know Bear carries 2 versions of the Douglas tartan.

Sounds like everybody has coverd the bases but I'll throw in my vote for two Philabegs to start with (knowing full well that it is just a start). Go with the Poly-V, it's a great fabric - warm when it needs to be, cool when it needs to be, and softer (less itchy) than my wool. I think you'll be very happy.

Sounds like they darked up the Douglas Tartan, dark green instead of a medium green, black instead of dark green, the purple is already very dark, and maybe a darker blue. Now I really would like to see this tartan
Colin, definately get a kilt in the Douglas tartan, like many tartans, seeing it on the computer screen does not do it justice!

Well, Doc, have you made any decisions yet? I just ordered a Black Watch Philabeg. So, c'mon, you have got to get something in the works, too.
I've done my share of funerals and the one thing I have yet to see in a funeral procession is a Brink's truck! If you can't take it with you, you might as well use it to buy yourself some FREEDOM!
Peace,
Mike

Damn, this waiting is KILLING me. Ugh, it actually, physically, hurts.
One Douglas Philabeg, one Ramsay Philabeg. Beautiful. In PV. With a belt, a Rob Roy Sporran, and of course, a leather strap for the sporran. Or chain, if Hamish isn't looking.
As for belt buckles, I like the Celtic ones on the website. Not sure if spending will allow for one of those through.
On a plus side, my battle with with my weight is going better. Doctor says I have lost a few pounds, which is good. I guess I really was bigger then I thought. Was on all sorts of medication for a while when I first got sick. It hosed me. Was over 350 pounds for a while. Lost a whole human being. And recently, I have lost a little more. The incident with the tape measure a while back was a real eye opener. Thinking you are losing mass by checking pant sizes is not a good means of marking weight loss. I am down to about 235 to 240. I still don't look that big of course. Nobody will believe me till I post pics I guess, will have to borrow a digital camera.
So I should be able to wear a size 46 on my just bellow my belly button where it belongs. Woo.

Graham, I thought you already had a PV kilt in the Gunn tartan? Have you run out of tartans already?
