Because I can't organize all my thoughts into a single post -

OMSI - Oregon Museum of Science and Industry - is rad. Who doesn't love dinosaurs and submarines?

Dan, will you have a vehicle at your disposal....if so, and if you arrive on Wednesday, maybe we can get an informal meet and greet together at dinner time.....?

Not picking up a car until Friday. We are staying near the airport and plan to take public transit downtown for dinner. I would love to meet up somewhere as long as it is convenient to public transit.

If you're at one of the airport hotels all you need to do is hop on light rail. You can take it all the way into downtown, and from there everything is easily walkable. To get to the SE Hawthorne/Belmont area you'd get off at the Hollywood transit center and grab the 75 southbound.

Trimet has a great map, which you can find here: http://trimet.org/schedules/

If there's anything I can do to help or steer you towards things to do that don't suck, just let me know.

Looks like you all pretty well have it covered. I won't get in to an argument about the quality of Mo's chowder, as everyone has their favorite. Will have to agree on Nana's Irish Pub in Newport, and no one mentioned the Highland Stillhouse in Oregon City. Only about 500 pours of whisky, many unavailable elsewhere in the US. And the last thing that went unmentioned by those of you who think you need a passport to cross the Columbia River. Fort Vancouver National Park in downtown Vancouver, right on the Columbia and 15 minutes from the Portland Airport and downtown Portland is a great place to spend some time. It was the first city west of the Mississippi includes Pearson Airfield, the longest continuously operating airfield in the US - since 1905 and the landing place of the Chkalov trans-polar flight from Mother Russia.

Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

    Greetings,

There are some great recommendations here. I'd also highly recommend visiting Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. If you have the time, be sure to take the drive all the way up to the Johnson Ridge Observatory. It offers some truly amazing views. I hope you enjoy your visit to the "Great Northwest"!

We picked up the rental car a day early and went to the Highland Stillhouse. Thanks for recommending it we had a fabulous time! Wonderful food, whiskey and people!

Dan, glad you enjoyed it (Highland Stillhouse), as normally it's only five minutes from the house and we could of joined you. But, alas, we are 5 hours south, headed south to the Bay Area and Martinez, CA., but stopped to rest near the California border.....
