I had a similar argument with a Gaelic speaking friend of mine who lives in Lochaber. He prefers to spell the name of our shared clan, Clan Ranald whereas the Lord Lyon and the Captain of the Clan spell it Clanranald. The logic of his argument was sound as he pointed to the Gaelic roots of the words and other similar usage: Clan Donald, Clan Cameron etc... For my side, I cited that Clanranald was a branch of Clan Donald and the missing space provided a clue to that effect and that regardless of that logic, we should follow what the Chief and Lord Lyon deem official in the name of unity. In the end, we were able to remain friends and move forward.
I want to echo Father Bill's remarks and add that regardless of how our various personalities and sensibilities may rub one another, let us make every effort to disagree without being disagreeable. It's not always easy, but it is a worthy goal.

Firstly. Can I offer my appologies to Peter for unintentionally being partly responsible for derailing a very interesting thread.
Secondly. The air needs clearing between me and Domehead and I shall attempt to do that as politely as I am able. However, should the mods feel the need to remove this post, then I will understand fully.
Domehead.
You obviously do not like what I write and how I write it and I regret that, but I am not sure what can be done about it. I can assure you there are no hidden meanings in my posts, they are what they are. However, I will endeavour to try harder to be more clear and of course, with the benifit of hindsight it is possible, on occasion, to re-phrase a post in a better fashion.
Therefore can I suggest that you stop putting words into my mouth as you have done in this very thread. You can rest assured that if I feel the need to say something then I most certainly will say it, I think I have somewhat of a reputation(not one that I particularly seek, I might add) here, for doing just that----------- a fact that you have failed to notice it seems--------- within the bounds of the rules of this website and good manners, I hope.
If you find that you are still searching for non existant hidden meanings within my posts and my posts are still causing you angst then the only solution is for you to stop reading them. I understand that there is even an "ignore" facility here to assist you in this.
I am away from home on some pressing family business, so I am unlikely to be contributing further to this thread, or this website for some time to come. I have every intention of returning to the fold as soon as I realistically can.

The Family Cameron can change it to "Lochiel" all they want. However, the instant it is expressed "Cameron of ...", it should be Loch Eil or Locheil. Otherwise, the established family being referenced is not of the hereditary property of Lochaber, near Linnhe. This is not my view. This is what it is. I am intentionally defending myself so as not to draw any support.
You may have a valid point, Domehead, in which case I would suggest you write to Donald Cameron of Lochiel and explain to him how he's spelling his own name wrong. Maybe he will take it to heart, or maybe not, but it's a bit pointless to argue it here on XMTS. Nobody here is in charge of the spelling of that name. The man you should be arguing with can be contacted via the info shown here:

Tobus,
If you are actually advising I inquire of Cameron of Lochiel, why the idiosyncrasy? I most certainly would, over a dram. I believe in respectful, informative conversation and truth to power: pillars of the Enlightenment and the responsibility of Military Officers. If, however, as it appears, you're being condescending...well, you've only to look inward for true intentions.
Now, via PM, I've been contacted by a member whom I respect and asked to lay off. I will.

Idiosyncrasy? I don't believe I was being idiosyncratic at all. It was an honest suggestion. You're berating people here for spelling the name as it has traditionally been spelt by those to whom the name belongs. The folks here at XMTS have no power or authority to start spelling the name differently, despite whatever logical argument you may present. They would be downright wrong, disrespectful, and presumptuous to start referring to a man's name with a spelling other than that which the man himself uses (or the family/clan). If you truly believe that there is a gross error in the way that name is spelt, it should be addressed to the person who would be most responsible for changing it. Not to those who are honestly and genuinely referring to the name by the official spelling that the man/clan uses.

As said, I've been asked to lay off.
P.S., your interpretation of the term "idiosyncrasy" may have worked, would I used the suffix "-atic" and referred to you. I didn't. It doesn't. Try again.
